Just listened to Valar Rereadis Jon I ADWD History of Westeros podcast with Aziz and Lady Ashaya. Emphasized is skin changing and Northern magic, along with its connection to other magic in Planetos. The skin changing magic in ASOIAF was one of my favorite parts upon reading and it hooked my interest.

Basically these guys have duo soul splitting / drop my consciousness in your body bag powers and magic, however this realm of mind reading / control and spiritual visions a la Palantirs and Glass Candles also contains Melisandre and R'hollor and by extension all godly and suprahuman powers.

The convergence of this Essosian and Westerosi magic is included at the Citadel, where I reside. Within the Citadel the rules are different, however it is an old institution, based in Oldtown with the soapy stones (alongside the Quill and Tankard). Magic as its own thing is an energy manipulated by many Powers and actors.

The convergence of Jon Snow and Melisandre at the Wall tells us something. It tells us that the Great Other or some other Shadow is upon us, and that the abilities and choices and fates of our peoples will tell us where this journey takes us.
